Was The Canadair Sabre The Best Sabre?
Canada built over 1,800 Sabres under license from North American Aviation, becoming very expert in the type. Sufficiently so that later marks of Canadian Sabres were fitted with more powerful Orenda engines and other refinements. This video investigates the history of the Canadian Sabres and asks whether they were, in fact, the best of the breed.

By far the best single volume on the Canadian Sabre is "The Canadair Sabre" by Milberry. Long out of print, it commands a high price on the used market but is well worth it

The Swing Wing Jaguar Was A Better Fighter Than People Think
Просмотров 46 тыс.День назад
The Grumman Jaguar was an innovative swing wing fighter that sadly suffered from being designed around the disastrous Westinghouse J-40 engine. It's development initially seemed to put Grumman out of the carrier fighter game, but would ultimately see it have the last laugh when swing wings came back into vogue in the 1960s. This video goes investigates the Jaguar and makes the case for it being...
The Makhonine MAK-10 Was Wanted By The Luftwaffe (Even If It Wasn't Very Good)
Просмотров 63 тыс.День назад
The Makhonine MAK-10 was a curious, yet brilliant aircraft. It featured a sliding wing that increased the size of the aerofoil for take off and landing, and decreased it for high speed flight. Although its size and the low power of its engine made performance less than impressive, it still demonstrated the potential of variable geometry wings more than 20 years before the idea became mainstream...
Why Stalin Didn't Want The ME-262 Copied (And What Happened Next)

The Soviet Union made a slow start in the jet age. They did, however, capture several examples of Nazi German jet fighters. This video investigates why they didn't simply copy and then develop the ME-262 and provides an overview of the twin-pod fighters that were developed as competition to the MiG-9. AIM-7 SPARROW: Development And Evolution Of A Pioneering But Troubled Weapon System
Просмотров 46 тыс.21 день назад
The AIM-7 Sparrow was a highly ambitious and sophisticated piece of 1950s technology, which pushed the boundaries of what was possible to cram into a missile body and airframe. Although its performance was disappointing in Vietnam, it remained the primary armament of USAF fighters until the AMRAAM entered widespread service in the late 1990s. Despite its importance to Cold War aviation history,...
Vought's F7U Cutlass Was Part Innovative Fighter And Part Safety Disaster

In recent times there have been attempts to rehabilitate the reputation of one of the most legendarily dangerous Cold War fighter aircraft: the F7U Cutlass. Hawker's Forgotten Suez Warrior Was An Early Cold War Great
Просмотров 64 тыс.Месяц назад
Hawker's Sea Hawk came late to the carrier jet fighter game, a result of dithering at the Fleet Air Arm. As a result, it turned up straight wings at a time when sweep was only a few years away. Fortunately the Sea Hawk was a truly excellent aircraft. Despite its humble origins it was every bit a match for the Grumman Panther and McDonnell Banshee. When the Fleet Air Arm deployed to Suez, it was...
Ryan's Ultimate Piston Engined Fighter Had The Coolest Name In Cold War Aviation (And A Jet Engine)

Ryan's Fireball was an interesting and innovative solution to the problem of getting a jet fighter aboard ship. Unfortunately it was underpowered and therefore lacked the performance to be useful in a jet-on-jet fight. The solution, inevitably was MORE POWER. And that was what Ryan produced in the XF2R-1 Dark Shark. Sources: There are two decent, but long out of print books on the Dark Shark. "...
Too Heavy And Too Slow, But The Douglas Skyknight Still Became A Korean And Vietnam War Warrior
Просмотров 105 тыс.Месяц назад
The Douglas Skyknight was the US Navy's first attempt to build a carrier-capable all-weather jet fighter. Unfortunately jet engine technology in the late 1940s wasn't quite developed enough to get all of that equipment off and back on a carrier deck safely. Willy The Whale, as it was unkindly known, could have faded into obscurity if it wasn't for the Marine Corps. In their hands it fought as a...

The Alkali was the first wholly-Soviet engineered air-to-air missile. Superb video. Back in the late ‘70s when I was in AF Junior ROTC we were told that the terrible reputation the Sparrow had earned over Vietnam was no longer applicable. Our Colonel claimed that it was going to guarantee NATO air superiority if the Russians were to attack Germany. I’m certain we all believed him without question.

Boyd… he then went on to write his gibberish about the decision loop. Nonsense that Guderian would be proud of. And yes I’ve read both Boyd’s pieces and The Blind Strategist. I can’t evaluate his fighter tactics here but I can call his decision loop the worst type of corporate management tautology speak blah which can be summed up as make decisions faster than your enemy which is all well and good as a plan except it falls apart when you get punched in the nose.

I dedicated myself to collecting all the "Great Planes" series about a decade ago when I found them by chance and realised the series was already 30yrs old. Your narration style is awfully close to that of the Great Planes series narrator (in only a handfull of the titles) who sounded more Australian. Your research and editing is by far better than any aircraft covered by that series especially as you cover spin offs of the main aircraft types aswell.

Excellent article, been waiting for one on the Canadair Sabre! I think I still have to give it the edge over the Aussie version because Canada, of course. ;-) On a more serious note, the downfall of our once world-class aerospace industry is a tragic story. If only Diefenbaker had the political will to stand up to the Americans the Arrow would have gone into full production and changed the course of military aviation bringing many advances years earlier then they ended up coming, and would have prevented the brain-drain to NASA when Avro Canada was gutted. Not to mention we would have gone on to both continue to build world-class warplanes but also have contributed more then a bloody robotic arm to the international space programs!

If the CAC Sabre can boom & zoom its target then it has the advantage. Those powerful 30mm cannon rounds need more deflection and to be closer to the target since there are only two of them. In a turning fight the Mark 6 takes it with better turn and better chance to hit. All else being equal they're pretty even. But since numbers count for something too I'll take 6000 heavy machine guns on 1000 Sabres over 200 cannons on 100 Sabres any day. We'll let the Aussies fight in the shade lol.

I'd probably say the CAC Sabre was the best because of it's huge firepower advantage. The US and Canadian variants had the 6 pack of 50 cal. machine guns that proved inadequate in Korea. The Australian version though had twin 30 mm cannons. More than enough for fighters or bombers
